distance makes the heart grow cultured: culture.week II

ANNA DOES CULTURE IN INDIANA!

Indiana's Culture Week got off to a great start: a trip to the Vietnam Kitchen with Bailey and HIllary, two of the most beautiful girls ever! We're having hot and sour soup, a Vietnamese classic!

Next cultural stop: The Schnitzelbank Authentic German Restaurant in Jasper, Indiana! Who knew? I mean really, who knew?? Welcome to a classic road trip with Jessie and Anna. Schnitzelbank is actually a German drinking game that we witnessed with David the German at Uncle Gus's house. We were witnesses mind you, not participants.
that's a lie. :)
No it's not!

Turkey Pot Pie...fantastic. Our waitress seemed kind of grumpy to be wearing her authentic german clothing, and truth be told, she looked a little ridiculous. But very cultured.
i must say, if i were forced to wear those liederhausen i would look grumpy too. or really cute.

Here we are at the abbey in Ferdinand, Indiana...unfortunately, the nuns were slackin' and didn't invite us in for bread and water. We considered banging on the door and yelling "SANCTUARY!" but then decided to sneak up the bell tower instead.
oh my god i totally have this thing for bell towers.

This is the view from the top of the bell tower. Who knew that Indiana was this pretty?

It doesn't get much better than a trip to the Speed Art Museum with Greg on a snowy day!

The Latin scholar translates ancient texts.
this is a medieval book! maybe it's a psalters, or a lectionary, or a benedictional, or a book of hours! thank you art history :)

Despite the fact that the Gators snagged a victory in the National Championships, some of the greatest people ever showed up at my house to celebrate Sooner-ness! Boomer Sooner!
boomer sooner. i was legitimately sad. and i had to hear all about it at church the next day.
you know what else was sad? Sarah had already left for university, so she wasn't there to celebrate! :(

There was also a chess game going on...so much culture in one house...

My sister is all about the Sooners!
So basically, culture week in Indiana was an epic success! I also ate at Ramsi's Cafe on the World, saw a FABULOUS string quartet play in a coffee shop, and made crepes, which were delicious! What a wonderful Culture Week!

EMILY DOES CULTURE IN DALLAS!

the wonderful chris fitzer picked me up (since my car had died on the way home from oklahoma, i was five exits from texas people come on) and we went to BENGAL COAST for an indian food adventure.

Indian food is INTENSE! Everyone should be cultured and go eat some!

i had the pork kebabs (you're the most beautiful girl i have ever seen - with a kebab) and they were delicious. they came with seasoned rice and half fried vegetables. really yummy. also they came with this weird mint sauce. which i tried. but i didn't particularly like. my father ate my leftovers.
I like the word shishkebab...and my father always eats the leftovers too. It must be a dad thing.

chris also had pork - curry pork. we thought it would be sacrilegious to have beef. they had beef because it wasn't just indian food. it was bengal coast food.

another bit of my culture week was going to abigail's vocal recital. the freshmen sang in italian and the sophomores sang in german. gotta love that schubert!
Nothing is as German as the Schnitzelbank.

i went to see this play. trysts in toledo. and i couldn't talk anyone into going with me. but it was fantastic and i wished that someone had come along. its this play written by a woman playwright the same time as william shakespeare was writing his plays. but of course no one thought her play was legitimate because she was a woman. duh. anyway. i saw it. and thought the english translation was a riot. plus. i've been to toledo. and its a fantastic spanish city.
It's a sad day when a girl can't find someone to go see great theater with. What were those Dallas kids thinking??
----------
ok my other bit of culture, well, it doesn't have a picture to go along with it. because no one wants to see a picture of me in downward dog with sweat dripping off my nose. :)
Gross.

so i went to yoga. and the first day i walked in and i didn't really know what was going on. and so as people trickled in, i kind of was sensing a pattern of the people in this class. there were the standard older bohemian women trying to harness their zen. there were the incredibly in shape yogi followers. and then there were the handful of twenty-something women gawking over the hot yoga instructor.
anyway. it was them. and me. and the yoga instructor had to keep telling me it wasn't ballet and that i needed to turn my feet in.
----------
i had an interesting week with culture. but i was sad i didn't make it to the dallas museum of art. chris told me all about the room that rained. and i wanted to walk through it.
Thanks for reading everyone!

Stay tuned for a potentially Cuban Culture Week!
